‘ઓમકારા ગ્રુપ’નો ગુજરાતી જલસો-હ્યુસ્ટનમાં

છઠ્ઠી ઓગસ્ટ અને રવિવારની બપોરે ત્રણ વાગ્યાથી રાતના આઠ વાગ્યા સુધી- એમ પુરા પાંચ કલાક સુધી, ઓમકારા ગ્રુપ અને હ્યુસ્ટનના ‘નમસ્કાર ગ્રુપ’ ના નેજા હેઠળ ગુજરાતી સંસ્કૃતિને ઉજાગર કરતો એક કાર્યક્રમ યોજાઈ ગયો. ગુજરાતી ગીતો, કાવ્યો, લોકગીતો, હાસ્ય, નાટક થી તરબતર આ કાર્યક્રમ માણવા લાયક  હતો.

મને જે ગમ્યુ એ આ હતું- ( આ કોઇ અહેવાલ કે વિવેચન નથી. )

જુના જમાનાનું નાટક કે જે ભાંગવાડી થિયેટરમાં ભજવાતું અને જેમાં કોઇ પુરૂષપાત્ર, સ્ત્રીના વસ્ત્રો પહેરીને સ્ત્રી ભૂમિકા ભજવતો તથા એમાં સરસ ગુજરાતી ગીતો રજૂ થતાં એ નાટકનુ મનોજ શાહ અને આપણા બોસ્ટનવાસી લેખક શ્રી. ચંદ્રકાંત શાહે રૂપાંતર કરીને હાલના સમયમાં રજુ કરેલ એ મહાન નાટક નો એક અંશ રજુ કર્યો  જેમાં પીઢ ગુજરાતી કલાકાર ઉત્કર્ષ મઝુમદાર અને યુવાન કલાકાર ચિરાગ વોરાએ અભિનય કર્યો હતો. અત્રે, એનું કથાનક કહેવાનો કોઇ ઇરાદો નથી. પણ સહેજ ઝાંખી કરાવી દઉં.

મણિલાલને જુની રંગભુમિના નાટકોમાં સ્ત્રીપાત્રો ભજવતા શ્રી. જયશંકર સુંદરી અને બાલ ગાંધર્વ જેવી સ્ત્રી ભૂમિકાઓ  ભજવીને પોતાનો ડંકો વગાડવો હતો પણ એને સખી, સહેલી કે દાસીની જ ભુમિકાઓ મળતી. મણિલાલ અને સુમનલાલ પોતપોતાના સ્વપ્નાઓની પૂર્તિ કરવાની તક જુએ છે અને પછી શરૂ થાય છે-ફેન્ટસીનો સંસાર.

જેમ આજે , કેટલાક લોકો ક્રિતી સેનન ને પરદા પર જોઇને એના દિવાસ્વપ્નો જોતા હોય છે એમ, મણિલાલ ( ઉત્કર્ષ મઝુમદાર ) ખયાલોમાં જે જુએ છે એને લેખક ચંદ્રકાંત શાહે અને દિગ્દર્શક મનોજ શાહે , જુની રંગભૂમિના કેટલાક લોકપ્રિય ગીતોનો કુશળતાપુર્વક ઉપયોગ કરીને રજુ કર્યા હતા

.એ ગીતો આ રહ્યા-

‘મીઠાં લાગ્યા છે મને આજના ઉજાગરા’….’ધુણી રે ધખાવી અમે’…’.મોહે પનઘટપે નંદલાલ’…’કેમ કરી પાણીડા ભરાય’…….’સાહ્યબો મારો ગુલાબનો છોડ’….. વગેરે..વગેરે…

કલાકાર ચિરાગ વોરાએ   સ્ત્રીપાત્ર વનલતાનો અભિનય કર્યો-લાલ સાડી પહેરીને.  વાંઢા સુમનલાલ તરીકે ઉત્કર્ષ મઝુમદાર  પણ છવાઇ ગયા હતા.

 શ્રી. ચિરાગ વોરાએ, ગુજરાતી રેપ સોન્ગ પણ માથે ઉંધી ટોપી પહેરીને કુશળતાપુર્વક પરફોર્મ કર્યું હતું.

૪૦ વર્ષથી જે નાટકો, સિરીયલો, ગુજરાતી ફિલ્મોમાં કામ કરી રહી છે એ અભિનેત્રી મીનળ પટેલે પણ કેટલીક રજુઆતો કરી હતી. જેમાં ‘એકોક્તિ’ મને ગમી હતી.  જાહ્નવી, ગાર્ગી વોરા, માનસી ગોહિલ  અને પાર્થિવ ગોહિલે પણ કેટલાક સદાબહાર ગીતો રજુ કરીને પ્રેક્ષકોને મંત્રમુગ્ધ કરી મુક્યા હતા.

સાંઇરામ દવે એ પોતાની લાક્ષણિક શૈલિથી અને કાઠિયાવાડી બોલી વડે શ્રોતાઓને ખુબ હસાવ્યા હતા.

સમગ્ર કાર્યક્રમમાં, યુવાન કવિ શ્રી. પ્રણવ પંડ્યાએ માસ્ટર ઓફ સેરિમની તરીકે સુંદર કામગિરી બજાવી હતી.

પાર્થિવ ગોહિલ, અને અન્ય સહાયક ગાયકોએ કેટલાક સદાબહાર ગીતોનો ગુલદસ્તો રજૂ કર્યો હતો.

હું તો છેલછબીલો ગુજરાતી……મેંદી તે વાવી માળવે…તારી બાંકી રે પાઘલડીનું ફુમતુ રે…..અમે મણિયારા…મારગડો મારો મેલી દ્યોને….પંખીઓએ કર્યો કલશોર….ચરરર મારૂં ચગડોળ ચાલે…હુતુતુતુ…વગેરે…વગેરે……

વાદ્યવૃંદમાં અન્ય વાજિંત્રકારોના નામ તો મને ખબર નથી પણ કુલકર્ણી નામના વાંસળીવાદકની ફ્લ્યુટના સુરો મને ખુબ આકર્ષી રહ્યા હતા. હું સ્ટેજ પર જઈને તેને  અને સરૈયાભાઇ નામના તબલાવાદકને

અભિનંદન આપી આવ્યો હતો.

કમનસીબે, મારી શારીરિક મર્યાદાઓને કારણે,  હું સાડાત્રણ કલાકનો સમગ્ર કાર્યક્રમ જોઇ શક્યો ન હતો. મારે વારંવાર ઉઠી ઉઠીને બહાર જવું પડતું હતું. ( યુ નો વોટ આઇ મીન !) એટલે ઘણી બીજી સારી બાબતોનો ઉલ્લેખ કરવાનું રહી ગયું હોય એમ બનવાજોગ છે.

મારા પ્રિય લેખકો ઉત્પલ ભાયાણી અને હિતેન આનંદપરાને મળીને મને ખુબ ખુબ આનંદ થયો. એવી જ રીતે જેમની સાથે હું ઇ-મેઇલના માધ્યમથી ઘણાં વર્ષોથી સંકળાયેલો રહ્યો છું એ પીઢ કલાકાર ઉત્કર્ષ મઝુમદારને મળીને, તેમની સાથે વાતો કરીને , કૃતકૃત્યતા અનુભવી.

નેશનલ પ્રમોટર  ઓમકારા ગ્રુપના, ડોક્ટર શ્રી. તુષાર પટેલ અને ‘નમસ્કાર ગ્રુપ’ના રાજેશ દેસાઈએ ખુબ ટુંકા સમયમાં આવો કાર્યક્રમ યોજ્યો તે માટે એમને પણ અભિનંદન.

કમનસીબે, રક્ષાબંધનના તહેવારને કારણે ઘણાં સુજ્ઞ પ્રેક્ષકો ‘આઉટ ઓફ ટાઉન’ હતા. કેટલાકને ઘેર , બહારગામના કુટુંબીઓ આવેલા અને ખાણીપીણીના કાર્યક્રમો હતા  તો કેટલાક  સિનિયરો પાંચ કલાક બેસી રહેવાય તેમ ન હોવાથી કાર્યક્રમથી દૂર રહ્યા હતા. ( હું પણ અંદર-બહાર, અંદર-બહાર જ કરતો હતો ને  ! ).

આ છે સ્વામિ નિત્યાનંદ ભારતી ની યાદગાર તસ્વીરો.

કહેવાની જરૂર ખરી કે સ્વામિ નિત્યાનંદ ભારતી એટલે બહુરંગી વ્યક્તિત્વધારી ‘નવીન બેન્કર’ ?

પહેલા ફોટામાં , મારા ખોળામાં માથુ મૂકીને જે બાળક સુતેલું દેખાય છે તે છે-  આજનો ડોક્ટર શેનિલ શાહ.  ૧૯૮૩ ના  સપ્ટેમ્બરમાં જન્મેલો આ છોકરો  આજે  ઓસ્ટીનમાં મેડીકલની પ્રેક્ટીસ કરે છે અને તેની પત્ની પણ મેડીકલ ડોક્ટર છે. તેઓ આજે બે સંતાનોના પેરન્ટ્સ છે. મારી નાની બહેન સુષ્મા શાહ અને બનેવીલાલ ડોક્ટર શ્રેણિક શાહના સંતાન છે.

નવીન બેન્કરને તો આવા વેશ ભજવવા ગમે છે.

બિપીનભાઈના જુતા  – એક સંસ્મરણ

-શ્રી. નવીન બેન્કર–

આ વાત મહાગુજરાતના તોફાનો વખતની છે. સોરી ! હું આજે પણ એ સમયને ‘આંદોલન’ નથી કહેતો. આંદોલન તો  માત્ર મહાત્મા ગાંધીએ જ કરેલાં. ત્યારપછી તો પોતાની વાતને સાચી ઠેરવવા થયેલાં ત્રાગાં જ છે. નાક દબાવીને, પોતાના સંઘબળના જોરે, કલ્લી કઢાવી લેવાની ઘટનાઓને હું આંદોલનો નથી કહેતો.

એ સમયે મારી ઉંમર સોળ વર્ષની હતી. ( ૧૯૫૬).  અમે  અમદાવાદની  એક પોળમાં ભાડાના ઘરમાં દસ કુટુંબીજનો રહેતા હતા. બાપુજીની નોકરી છૂટી ગયેલી. ગુજરાન ચલાવવા, હું છાપાં અને બપોરના વધારા વેચતો. મારા  દાદીમા કોઇ સગાંને ત્યાં નાનામોટા કામો કરતા. બદલામાં, એ સગાં, અનાજપાણી અને ચીજવસ્તુઓ આપતા.  એ ઘરમાં મારાથી ત્રણ વર્ષે મોટો એક છોકરો પણ હતો.એનું નામ બિપીન. શાંત, સૌમ્ય અને ઓછાબોલા સ્વભાવના એ છોકરાના જુના શર્ટ્સ અને સેન્ડલ પણ મને મળતાં. એ જમાનામાં ખમીસ પણ હું શુક્રવારીમાંથી આઠ આનામાં ખરીદીને પહેરતો હતો. આ શુક્રવારી, ઘીકાંટાની કોર્ટ પાસે ભરાતી. પછી કાળક્રમે એ રવિવારે ગુજરી બજાર તરીકે વિક્ટોરિયા ગાર્ડન પાસે નદીના પટમાં ભરાતી થઈ હતી. આજે પણ ત્યાં જ, નવા રૂપરંગ સહિત ભરાય છે.

બિપીને એકવાર લાલ રંગના બાટાના સેન્ડલ પહેર્યા હતા. મને એ સેન્ડલ બહુ ગમી ગયેલા. હું વિચારતો કે આ સેન્ડલ થોડા જુના થાય અગર બિપીન નવા સેન્ડલ લાવે તો મને જ આ સેન્ડલ મળી જશે મહિનાઓ સુધી રાહ જોયા પછી, ગાંધીરોડ પર જુમ્મા મસ્જિદ પાસે આવેલી બાટા શુ કંપનીના શો કેઇસમાં મુકેલા એ સેન્ડલનો ભાવ પણ હું પુછી આવેલો. એ વખતે એની કિંમત હતી ૨૮ રૂપિયા. મારી તો એટલી હેસિયત ન હતી. મેં એક દિવસ હિમ્મત કરીને બિપીનભાઈને કહ્યું-‘ તમારા આ સેન્ડલ તમને બહુ સરસ લાગે છે. ‘ બિપીને કદાચ મારી આંખમાં મારી ઇચ્છા વાંચી લીધી હશે કે કેમ, પણ એણે તરત જ કહ્યું-‘ નવીન, તને ગમે છે ? તું લઈ લે. આમે ય મેં બહુ પહેર્યા છે. હું નવા લઈ લઈશ.’  અને આમ એ ૨૮ રૂપિયાના સેન્ડલ મને મળી ગયા હતા.

પછી તો કાળનું ચક્ર ફરતું રહ્યું…

બહેનની સ્પોન્સરશીપ પર  નવીન અમેરિકા આવી ગયો.

૧૯૮૨માં જ્યારે એ અમદાવાદ ગયો ત્યારે ન્યુયોર્કના લોંગ આઈલેન્ડ સીટીની એક ગારમેન્ટ ફેક્ટરી –RUSS TOGS INC-માં કામ કરીને થોડા ડોલર્સ બચાવીને, અમદાવાદમાં, આઠના ભાવના ડોલર, ૧૨ના ભાવે આપીને થોડા પૈસા બનાવેલા.

ઉંમર પણ ત્યારે ૪૨ વર્ષની જ હતી.

 બિપીનભાઈની તપાસ કરતાં ખબર પડી કે એ તો ઘણાં શ્રીમંત થઈ ગયા છે અને હવે મુંબઈના વરલી વિસ્તારના કોઇ  ભવ્ય ફ્લેટમાં પત્ની અને દીકરી સાથે રહે છે.

જોગાનુજોગ, કોઇ મિત્રના દીકરાના લગ્ન પ્રસંગે મુંબઈ જવાનું થયું હતું.

અમેરિકાની ગારમેન્ટ કંપની- RUSS TOGS-ના કાપડમાંથી સીવડાવેલા શાનદાર કપડા અને બાટાની  ચંપલો પહેરીને નવીન બેન્કર ઉપડ્યા વરલીના એ ફ્લેટ પર.

મનમાં ફાંકો હતો કે આજે બિપીનભાઈને બતાવીશ કે હવે હું પણ તમારા જેવા વસ્ત્રો અને શુઝ પહેરી શકું છું. લોકલ ટ્રેન અને બસમાં મુસાફરી કરીને , એ વરલી ઉતર્યો ત્યારે મેઘરાજા એ તાંડવ મચાવી દીધું હતું. રસ્તાઓ પર પાણી ભરાઈ ગયા હતા. નવીનભાઈ પલળી ગયા.

બાટાની નવીનક્કોર ચંપલો પણ પાણીમાં તણાઇ ગઈ.

જેમતેમ કરીને બિપીનભાઇના ફ્લેટ પર તો પહોંચી ગયા, નસીબસંજોગે બિપીનભાઇ ઘેર જ હતા, ટુવાલથી શરીર લુછ્યું અને બિપીનભાઈના કપડાં પહેરીને સોફામાં બેઠો..ખાઇ-પી વાતો કરીને, જતી વખતે બિપીનભાઇના આપેલા શુઝ પહેરીને પાછો ફર્યો ત્યારે એને પોતે કરેલા અભિમાન બદલ શરમ આવી.

કુદરત જાણે કહેતી હતી કે ‘નવીન, તારે તો બિપીનભાઇના શુઝ જ પહેરવાના છે’.

એ વાતને ય આજે તો પાંત્રીસ વર્ષ વીતી ગયા છે. આજે ભારતથી કોઇ સગાં હ્યુસ્ટન આવ્યા અને તેમણે સમાચાર આપ્યા કે બિપીનભાઈ તો હમણાં જ ગુજરી ગયા.

મારી આંખ ભીની થઈ ગઈ.

આ તસ્વીર તારીખ ૩૦ માર્ચ ૧૯૭૧ની છે- અમારા ડોક્ટર કોકિલાબેન અને પ્રકાશભાઈ પરીખના લગ્ન વખતની. એમાંની વ્યક્તિઓનો પરિચય કરાવી દઉં.

ઉભા રહેલામાં ડાબી બાજુથી- માથે ઓઢેલી સફેદ સાડીમાં જે બહેન છે તે પાટણમાં ડોક્ટર કોકિલાબેનને ત્યાં ઘરકામ કરનાર બહેન છે.

બીજા નંબરે મારી પ્રિય, ભોળી, પ્રેમાળ પત્ની કોકિલા છે. એની બાજુમાં ઝુલ્ફાવાળો અને બ્લેક સુટ પહેરેલો ઉંચો યુવાન છે તે હું એટલે કે ત્રીસ વર્ષની વયનો નવીન બેન્કર છું મારી બાજુમાં મારો  એકનો એક નાનો ભાઈ વિરેન્દ્ર છે. એની બાજુમાં જે ખુબસુરત યુવાન છે જે જુના એક્ટર રાજેન હકસર જેવો દેખાય છે તે રણજી ટ્રોફીમાં રમી ચુકેલા ક્રિકેટર શ્રી. રાહુલ ધ્રુવ છે અને તેની બાજુમાં છોકરી જેવી દેખાય છે તે મારી નાની બહેન અને આજની વિદ્વાન ગુજરાતી કવયિત્રી દેવિકા ધ્રુવ છે . કહેવાની જરૂર નથી કે રાહુલ અને દેવિકા પતિ-પત્ની છે. તેમના સંતાનો પણ ખુબ તેજસ્વી છે. કોઇ સાયન્ટીસ્ટ છે તો કોઇ ડોક્ટર છે અને ગ્રાન્ડ ચિલ્ડ્રન્સ પણ વિવિધ ક્ષેત્રે નામના મેળવી રહ્યા છે.

ખુરશીમાં બેઠેલામાં- ડાબી બાજુથી- મારી બા કમળાબેન, એની બાજુમાં ડોક્ટર કોકિલાબેન, મારા દાદીમા વિચક્ષણ વિદ્યાબા, પ્રકાશભાઇ પરીખ અને છેલ્લે ઝબ્ભો, બંડી અને ધોળી ટ્પ્પીમાં મારા પિતાશ્રી. રસિકલાલ રતનલાલ બેન્કર છે.

હવે વારો આવે છે પેલી ફર્શ પર બેઠેલી બે બેબલીઓનો. ડાબી બાજુ છે તે સુષ્મા અને એની બાજુમાં સંગીતા. સુષ્મા ૧૯૫૭ અને સંગીતા ૧૯૬૨ ની બોર્ન છે.  મારા લગ્ન ૧૯૬૩માં થયેલા એટલે આ વિરેન્દ્ર, સુષ્મા અને સંગીતા અમારા ખોળામાં રમીને મોટા થયેલા, અમારા બાળકો જ છે. આ બન્ને બહેનો વિશે તો આખા જુદા લેખો લખાય તેમ છે. સંગીતા લતા મંગેશકરના ગીતો ગાવાને કારણે ટેક્સાસની કોયલ ગણાય છે. રેડીયો જોકી પણ છે. સુષમા પણ સારુ ગાઈ શકે છે. અને કલાના વિવિધ ક્ષેત્રે પ્રવૃત્ત છે.
